Who do I help best?

Understanding My Ideal Clients

In my practice as a therapist, I have come to recognize that my most impactful work occurs when clients walk through the door motivated by their internal scale tipping toward taking action and facing any fear of change rather than remaining in the comfort of the known of their current situation.

1. Individuals Facing Trauma

Many of my clients are those who have experienced trauma in various forms, whether it be childhood adversity, relational trauma, or significant life events that have left emotional scars. These clients may struggle with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, or feelings of disconnection from themselves and others.

  • Characteristics:

    • They may have difficulty processing their experiences.

    • They often feel overwhelmed by their emotions and find it hard to articulate their feelings.

    • They may exhibit avoidance behaviors, such as steering clear of situations that remind them of their trauma.

  • How I Help:

    • Using EMDR therapy, we work to create safety and build skills to manage processing experiences that are keeping clients stuck chronically in an over or under activated nervous state. We will take our time practicing grounding skills and visualization. We may then work on desensitizing clients from some of the stronger negative images stored as part of the past experience. When clients are ready, I guide them through the process of reprocessing traumatic memories, allowing them to integrate these experiences into their life narratives in a healthier manner.

    • I create a safe space where clients can express their emotions without judgment, fostering a sense of trust and security.

2. Individuals Struggling with Addiction or Early Recovery

My clients also include those grappling with addiction, whether it be substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, or compulsive behaviors. These individuals often feel trapped in cycles of dependency and may struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, or hopelessness.

  • Characteristics:

    • They might be in denial about the extent of their addiction or the impact it has on their lives.

    • Many experience relational conflicts as a result of their addiction, which can lead to isolation and loneliness.

    • They may have tried various methods to overcome their addiction but have not found lasting success.

  • How I Help:

    • Through a combination of person-centered therapy and DBT techniques, I help clients cultivate emotional regulation skills, effective communication, and mindfulness practices.

    • I work collaboratively with them to identify triggers and develop healthier coping mechanisms, empowering them to make positive changes in their lives.

    • Some clients may need help with resources for support in recovery. Some have established early recovery but looking for support for mental health issues as they grow and adapt to a new design for living.

3. Individuals Seeking Personal Growth

Another significant segment of my ideal clientele includes those who are motivated to engage in personal growth. These clients recognize that they have areas in their lives that need attention and are ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

  • Characteristics:

    • They are often introspective and willing to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

    • Many express a desire to break free from unhealthy patterns and seek a more authentic way of living.

    • They may be looking for guidance in setting and achieving personal goals.

  •

  • How I Help:

    • I facilitate a therapeutic environment where clients can explore their inner selves and identify their core values and aspirations.

    • By helping them set realistic and achievable goals, I provide ongoing support and accountability to keep them on track.

4. Individuals Navigating Life Transitions

Life transitions—such as divorce, career changes, becoming a parent, or coping with the loss of a loved one—can be significant stressors. My ideal clients in this category are those who feel unmoored during these times and seek guidance to navigate these changes.

  • Characteristics:

    • They may feel anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed by the changes they are experiencing.

    • Many struggle with feelings of inadequacy or fear that they won't be able to handle their new circumstances.

    • They often need support in redefining their identities in light of their changing life situations.

  • How I Help:

    • I offer a compassionate ear and practical strategies to help them cope with their feelings of uncertainty.

    • Together, we can explore their past coping mechanisms and create new, healthier strategies to manage the stress of transitions.

    •

5. Individuals Seeking Emotional Regulation

Clients who struggle with emotional dysregulation are also ideal for my practice. These individuals may find it challenging to manage their emotions, leading to outbursts, withdrawal, or self-destructive behaviors.

  • Characteristics:

    • They often feel overwhelmed by their emotions, experiencing intense highs and lows.

    • Many may have difficulty in relationships due to their emotional responses.

    • They may recognize the need for change but feel uncertain about how to manage their feelings effectively.

  • How I Help:

    • By utilizing DBT techniques, I teach clients skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

    • I create a supportive environment where clients can practice these skills and receive feedback, leading to gradual improvements in their emotional health.

    •

6. Individuals with a History of Codependency

Many of my ideal clients have a history of codependency, often stemming from relationships where they prioritized others' needs over their own. They may struggle to establish healthy boundaries and find it difficult to assert themselves.

  • Characteristics:

    • They often feel responsible for the feelings and behaviors of others.

    • Many experience a sense of loss when trying to assert their own needs.

    • They may fear rejection or conflict, leading them to stay silent in relationships.

  • How I Help:

    • I work with clients to recognize and challenge codependent patterns, helping them learn to prioritize their own needs.

    • Through therapy, they can develop healthier relationship dynamics and establish boundaries that foster mutual respect.

    •

7. Individuals Seeking Holistic Integration

My ideal clients also include those who are interested in a holistic approach to therapy, recognizing the interconnectedness of thoughts, emotions, physical health, and spirit.

  • Characteristics:

    • They may have a background in holistic practices or be open to exploring them.

    • Many are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

    • They recognize that healing involves addressing multiple aspects of their lives.

  • How I Help:

    • By integrating somatic developmental trauma therapy, I help clients connect their emotional experiences with physical sensations, fostering a deeper understanding of their bodies and emotions.

    • Together, we explore ways to nurture their mental, emotional, and physical well-being, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

    •

Conclusion

In summary, my ideal clients are those who are ready to address the complexities of trauma and addiction, those seeking personal growth, and individuals navigating life transitions. They are motivated to engage in the therapeutic process and open to exploring the interconnected aspects of their lives. I strive to create a safe, compassionate, and empowering environment where clients can embark on their healing journeys. By leveraging my expertise in mind-body connection, EMDR, CBT, DBT, and person-centered therapy, I aim to guide them toward meaningful change and a more integrated, fulfilling life. If you identify with any of these characteristics and are ready to take the next step, I am here to support you.
