Books
HUBERMAN LAB
For the latest on neuroscience - I love Andrew Huberman's podcast! The episodes with Dr. Paul Conti GUEST SERIES covers many concepts counselors learn in graduate school. The first episode is dated 9/13/23 GUEST SERIES: DR PAUL CONTI: HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.

Books
TRAUMA:
To learn how trauma physically reshapes the brain and body and how it can heal - I recommend "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. This helps people understand why simply talking about stressful or traumatic experiences does not always create change/healing/recovery and connecting to your body "bottom up strategy" is often extremely beneficial. Another great book is: "What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing" by Bruce D. Perry, M.D., PhD and Oprah Winfrey. For a first hand account of complex trauma by acclaimed journalist Stephanie Foo, I recommend "What My Bones Know." This first-hand perspective of resilience in the face of complex trauma that is also research-based will connect with you if you are looking to reclaim your agency.

ADDICTION:
I recommend "What Addicts Know: 10 Lessons From Recovery to Benefit Everyone" by Christopher Kennedy Lawford if you or a loved one is struggling with addiction. This book really spoke to me on my own journey toward wellbeing - helpful if you are struggling with addiction yourself or a loved one is struggling. The book shares profound life lessons anyone can learn and apply to their life in recovery - including recovery as a support person to a loved one struggling with addiction.
YOGA
YOGA in Nashville, TN*

Beginners: Try a level one class at Sanctuary Yoga.

12 Step Yoga: Stephanie Bleecher of Nashville offers 12 Step Yoga classes. Stephanie offers classes at Nashville Yoga Company (hot yoga). For Stephanie's 40 minute Recovery Yoga instruction on YouTube see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=zlJA_Wki1Bo.

Yoga that is not "hot" yoga - Classes in "Shiva Room" at Shakti Yoga are a good choice for beginners.

Terrific heated yoga classes are available at Farenheit Yoga or Hot Yoga of East Nashville. I recommend you bring a large water bottle, towel to put on mat, mat and extra towel/change of clothes if trying hot yoga for the first time.
Shakti Power Yoga offers smaller classes.
Small World Yoga offers yoga classes accessible to all.

NOTE: It is critical in yoga to listen to your body, your own needs mindfully without pushing/comparing to others - it is a practice of self-awareness and mindfulness. The practice is matching your movement to your breathe. Some practices are accompanied by music and others are not. Every class is different and a research project about you - a practice of awareness and curiosity.

SOUND HEALING:
Farenheit Yoga and The Happy Hour (wellness studio) offer sound healing sessions that are a relaxing and sensory experience.
*NOTE: I am not affiliated with any of these organizations nor do I receive any compensation - I am simply hoping to share some of the resources that I find helpful in Nashville TN for health and wellbeing.
